Bull Market on The Strip
Las VegasâThe dawn does not come up like thunder at the Stardust Sports and Race Book on Las Vegas Boulevard.
At six in the morning the hotel lobby is empty except for a handful of what they call âearly crawlersâ on The Stripâbut the casino is humming with action.
The big boards never close in the Stardust. A wall of betting boards and TV sets half the size of a football field will give you the numbers on everything from the fourth race at Pimlico to the Bramble-Rosario fight and the baleful notation that Northwestern is 250-1 to make the Rose Bowl.
Bramble is 3-2 over Rosarioâa good betâand Camacho is 3-2 over Edwards.
So what? Who needs that kind of gambling?
A 3-2 bet is a hot tip when it comes from E.F. Hutton or the Chicago Board of Trade, but at this hour of the morning in the Stardust Sports and Race Lounge, anything less than 5 or 6 to 1 will cause sniggering in the front-row seats and cause people to slink out the side exit doorsâ and into the hot strange glare of the early morning sun.
No cabs are waiting out there on that lonely curb. A terrible windstorm flogged the boulevard last night and sent most of the smart people home early. The wind blasted palm fronds across the parking lot and at Circus Circus and blew me off a 12-foot hurricane fence on the far rim of the new parking lot at the Las Vegas Hilton.
A small man wearing a âDeath From Aboveâ T-shirt approached me near the Gai Mu poker pit and asked if I could put him onto some action.
I ignored him, but a man walking behind me reached down into his boot and zapped him with a 50,000-volt Nova XR-5000 stun gun.
